2006 Lincoln Center Career Retrospective

1997 Choreography Awards Board of Governors Award - Recognition in Choreographic Excellence

Director/Choreographer, Vincent Paterson is an impressive force in nearly every element of the entertainment industry including film, world theater and Broadway, rock and roll tours, opera, music videos, television, and commercials. His work takes him around the globe, where he is sought after as a visionary and a collaborator. As a cinematic tribute to Vincent’s direction and choreography in an array of electronic media, The Lincoln Center Film Society presented an evening entitled “Vincent Paterson, Master of the Media.” A similar evening was previously held at Paris’ Cinematheque Francais.

At present, Vincent is enthusiastically engrossed in directing and writing Cirque Du Soleil’s Elvis set to open at Las Vegas’ CityCenter in 2009. He directed the critically acclaimed Manon for both the Los Angeles Opera and the Berlin Staatsopera. It starred Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon and was conducted in Los Angeles by Placido Domingo. Vincent’s initiation into the opera world was his direction of the TV program, Anna Netrebko: The Woman, The Voice. This received a nomination for “Best Television Arts Program” at the Montreaux Film Festival. The DVD has reached “gold” status and is the top selling classical DVD in European history. Vincent directed and choreographed Berlin’s first original production of the musical Cabaret. Set at Bar Jeder-Vernunft, a mirror-tent from 1914, the show ran for four years and is now touring Germany. Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian novelist and politician, reviewed, "If I would ever have to decide to see one show again, it would be ‘Cabaret’ at the Bar Jeder Vernunft in Berlin."

Vincent's direction of the play Gangsta Love, set in a boxing club, earned him a Los Angeles Drama-Logue award for Outstanding Director. He directed Prague’s National BlackLight Theater in Gulliver’s Travels. Vincent received a Tony nomination for choreographing Hal Prince’s Kiss of the Spiderwoman. He choreographed London's West End production of Lenny for director, Sir Peter Hall, starring Eddie Izzard and LA Opera’s Grand Duchess for director Garry Marshall.

Vincent directed (with 100 cameras) and choreographed the musical sequences in Lars Von Trier's Dancer In The Dark, which captured the Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Among the many films he choreographed are The Birdcage and Closer for director Mike Nichols, and Evita for director Alan Parker. Threnody, Vincent's dance-film reflection on September 11th, won the Gold Jury Award at the Houston World Film Festival. It was produced and shot by renowned director, Joe Pytka.

The TNT Telefilm, In Search of Dr. Seuss, which Vincent directed, received seven Emmy nominations. He choreographed ABC's, South Pacific, starring Glenn Close, as well as several Academy and Grammy Awards programs.

Vincent has collaborated with Michael Jackson and Madonna on numerous projects including directing and choreographing Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour that was the centerpiece for the documentary, Truth or Dare. He created Madonna’s legendary “Marie Antoinette”/Vogue performance for MTV. Vincent directed & choreographed the Bad Tour for Jackson as well as conceiving and choreographing Smooth Criminal and many other Jackson music videos and live performances. He directed Michael Jackson's video, Blood on the Dance Floor, shot by famed DP Conrad Hall.

Vincent has choreographed over 250 commercials including commercial campaigns for Pepsi, GE, Rubbermaid and NIKE, directed commercial campaigns for Payless and El Pollo Loco, Dharma and Greg and a documentary for Project Angel Food.

Vincent is featured in the best selling, Smithsonian publication, Masters of Movement: Portrait’s of America’s Greatest Choreographers. He was recently a judge on Bravo’s Step It Up And Dance!.
